“Once, when visiting Patek Phillipe in Geneva, perhaps the best watchmaking firm in the world, one of the most senior watchmakers showed me the inside of the movement of a particularly lovely Patek on which he had worked for several months. It was beautifully finished, even engraved, in every detail and in every part. I said to Monsieur Bernay, ‘But this must be dozens and dozens of hours of work…and it’s all on the inside of the watch, where no one will ever see it…the owner won’t even know it’s there!?’ He said quietly, ‘Yes, but I will.’”
From a letter written to me from my client William Turnage, received in 1991.
