Generation Gap

by | May 30, 2014

I enjoy the conversation about framebuilding’s twists and turns, even the ones about how the barriers of entry and many of the design elements have devolved over generations. But I care far less about it than some might think. At any point in my years at the bench, I had no expectations or grand plans for perpetuating the niche. It wasn’t a role I wanted. My energy belongs on driving my work forward, and not on what others who now follow are doing. But at times I feel anxious about how the trade has become a sideshow to the industry, and a freak show at that, when it all once meant so much more.

I don’t miss the old days. I do miss the elegance. I’m glad I had a chance to put my toes in the water.
