Justin Spinelli

My long time pal and team mate, Justin Spinelli, found a note I mailed him a week or so after his last race with us as a youngster. If I recall, he was 18 years old and had ridden to a 2nd place at the U23 Cyclocross National Championships in Fort Devens, Massachusetts, right behind Tim Johnson and ahead of Jonathan Page (who would also become a team mate and friend for three years beginning in 1999). The result was among the highlights of his several years on the developmental team I was sponsoring. I have stayed close with Justin all along and consider the relationship we have one of the true gifts of being a part of this sport. The memories we make on the weekends are priceless and everlasting.

Dear Justin

Thank you very much for your fine participation this past year with NECSA. You were always a pleasure to be around this summer. My only regret is that I didn’t have more time to get to know you better.

My happiness with you and for you was at a peak when I watched your incredible performance today at the ‘cross nationals. Everyone on NECSA was so proud to watch you and cheer you on, as we’ve become so used to doing this entire season. It was a delight to listen to the announcers nearly run out of superlatives trying to describe your efforts today.

With the talent, fine character, and focus that you’ve exhibited, no doubt we’ll be following your cycling career for years to come.

Thank you for riding with us, and letting us have the good feelings that come from being around someone as special as you. Wherever you race next year, please don’t forget us – our best wishes and cheers will always be with you.

Sincerely

Richard Sachs
