Self-awareness must be a character trait that evolves and, like learning to play a piano and make the sounds coming from it more lovely, practiced. I didn’t remember not having it, but in 1969 as a first year Peddie School student, I clearly misread myself. I thought things were going along swimmingly well until that one morning I was hit with the news that I was taking up space. Eventually I expanded my reach to fit the inside of the box I’d check for the next three years.
